2-1-1: providing care - help - hope

There is an increasing number of unmet needs for children, unemployed and underemployed individuals, older adults, the homeless and the “new poor,” but the resources available and the delivery systems for helping people are shrinking. 2-1-1 provides people with a simple, effective way to get connected to available resources in their area.

2-1-1 Resources

Apply to be part of the 2-1-1 Database

If you represent a nonprofit organization or other service provider and would like to be included in 2-1-1's database, please download an application. United Way staff will follow up with eligible organizations. Being listed in our database is free of charge and will help people in our area gain access to additional resources. Review our policy on database development.

Please note: Due to an increasing demand for basic needs, we are presently focusing our efforts on creating and maintaining the organizations that offer these services in the 2-1-1 database. As a result, we are temporarily placing a hold on development of resources that do not offer basic needs programs to the community. All applications outside of these paramaters will be archived and reviewed again as soon as we are able to expand our capacity to address additional areas of service.

For more information about applying for inclusion in the 2-1-1 Database, please contact Maria Williams at Maria.Williams@LiveUnitedSEM.org.

Connect your company or organization to 2-1-1

2-1-1 can provide your employees with an invaluable link to resources in metro Detroit to help them and their families. By finding solutions for issues that arise in their personal lives, your employees will be more productive and happy in their workplace.

Organizations with standard landline phones should have no problem dialing 2-1-1, but sometimes, simple modifications must be made to your phone system if it is an in-house phone network or PBX system. If you experience problems dialing 2-1-1, please view this guide or contact Carol Hornung at Carol.Hornung@LiveUnitedSEM.org.

Why it matters

In its first full year of service (2005), 2-1-1 managed nearly 70,000 calls. In 2010, that number rose to 360,000 contacts. In 2010, UWSEM’s 2-1-1 geographic coverage included 45% of the population of the state of Michigan and 2-1-1 Community Care Advocates provided referrals for over 300,000 unique services.

2-1-1 collects and maps data trends in the health and human services sector, which contributes toward helping UWSEM and the community at large develop strategies for addressing various acute and long-term challenges in the region. For example, when the economy took a downturn in 2009, the request for food quickly rose to the top of callers’ needs, and 2-1-1 was able to compile the data and better illustrate the need for action in the region.

What we've done

In 2005, UWSEM launched 2-1-1, a 24/7/365 information and referral line that currently provides access to more than1,500 services provided by 1,800 agencies that offer access to more than 12,000 programs that anyone can call to receive information about health and human services in Lapeer, Macomb, Monroe, Oakland, Washtenaw and Wayne counties.

2-1-1 On The Go! (2-1-1 OTG!) is a mobile service that complements the access to resources provided via 2-1-1 and provides face-to-face outreach to homeless individuals in their own environment. It canvasses the community in specially marked vehicles, equipped with state-of-the-art technology,

2-1-1 staff connect clients with resources for shelter, food assistance programs, mental health services and other basic necessities. In the past 3+ years, 2-1-1-OTG! has encountered thousands of individuals, providing referrals and connections to community resources, and helped hundreds access agencies that have led to permanent employment and/or housing in the ongoing effort toward helping them become working, contributing citizens of the region.

Our goals for this year

2011 - 2012

  • Grow the 2-1-1 prevention and recovery services to assist people before they enter crisis mode.
  • Expand regional call center coverage by adding Lapeer County.
  • Partner with the other 2-1-1 systems in the state on the implementation of a statewide 2-1-1 database and call-routing system.
  • Interact with or advocate on behalf of 1,000 homeless individuals through 2-1-1 OTG!

Our partners
