I learned about the No Worker Left Behind (NWLB) program that offered financial support to those who were left jobless due to the economy, were in jobs that were declining or to those that needed help in low earning positions. The NWLB program was created as a strategy to transition workers into good paying jobs and occupations in high demand or in emerging industries. This program still pays participants $5000 per year for up to two years at a college, university or training facility for qualifying occupational paths.
Needless to say, I capitalized on the available funds to change my path and since I entered the NWLB program in 2007 I have earned my Master of Public Administration from Wayne State University and transitioned from the private industry as a waitress/manager of a small bar and restaurant to working in research at the Institute of Gerontology at Wayne State University and in Public Policy at the United Way for Southeast Michigan.

I am so thankful to have access to the Internet (even with its slow speed)...and I realized that many people would love to not only have a computer in the home, but a home to live in as well !
My prayer is that I can maintain a positive presence on all these sites...and use them for good :)

I read an article in the newspaper today regarding several Detroit Public Schools that are slated to be closed. I read it near the beginning of my school day, fighting back tears, not for myself, but for those affected, such as colleagues with whom I have stood with, laughed with, shared lesson plans, classroom management strategies, and other events that are part of being in the teacherhood.
Before I could read the posted story twice, one of my co-workers told me to get the wrinkles out of my face and to remember the source of my strength. Instead of "grieving", fight back with faith, and focus on the fact that there are blessings yet to be experienced, even in the midst of a happening such as this.
She was right. I slowly began to turn my mind around and instead wish favor on those colleagues and the communities that they serve.
I also prayed that they would have strength for the journey...and an ability to look ahead and not look back.
You see...the "List" affects everyone.

It can be challenging for parents to get their kids to activities, even when the activities are good ones. Kids miss practice for all sorts of reasons: music lessons, math tutoring, lack of transportation, and the list can goes on. And yet, thousands of kids show up for Think Detroit PAL practices and games, day in, day out, every year.
One of those kids is Dalson. Read More »

I bring this up in light of the firing of GM CEO Rick Wagoner, a generous supporter and friend of the United Way. Read More »
It's been about a month since I was on the United Way of Southeastern Michigan's website poking around and since I came across an opportunity to win a grant which would be awarded by the United Way. It asked me to answer many questions and write an essay about a service project that I would like to start, in which would be very beneficial.
At first I thought, hmm what's the chances of me winning this, and then I thought about how important it is to me to make a difference in this world. With some great ideas already popping up in my head I decided to write an essay and submit it!
A couple weeks later I received an email regarding winning $500 towards the service project i proposed. I was absolutely thrilled!
Today Eric (My boyfriend) and I met with Kira downtown and started to begin organizing the event.
It's going to take a lot of work and a lot of thinking, but Kira made a great analogy. She said that right now it is like putting together a puzzle, first you start with the corners, then you organize the colors and continue it until you piece every piece together.
Right now we are working on the corners! We meet with Kira on the 21st and will discuss more.
More information to come!
I hope that everyone will be apart of this and volunteer once we have everything ready and set to go! :)
We met our expectations this week, actually we surpassed them and we got to finish early. My team was able to come back and rest so we can stay up all night enjoy our team and all the others.
I'm hungry and I can't wait for dinner.
This Alternative Spring Break trip in Detroit has probably been one of the most rewarding experiences of my life. Yesterday we met Bill, the man in charge of the ramp building project. Bill is hands down the most inspiring man i have ever met. Bill is the type of man you could sit down with for hours and talk to about the project, he knows everything and anything you would ever need to know about ramp building and the program. He, alone, inspires me to be a better person.
We have a crew of two men who we work with as well, Mike and Rob. They were both laid off from Chrysler about two years ago and each live over 100 miles from our work site. Even with the own struggles that Mike and Rob are facing, they continue to volunteer their services and help others who need it more then they do.
My team is amazing. There are seven of us, we're all goof balls but we get the job done. We are all extremely excited for Thursday when we get to see Jason ride down the ramp for the first time. I'm sure it will be quite an emotional and inspirational experience.
That is all I've really got for now.

Immediately after processing Mike's death I had to make a decision... did I want to stay in Detroit or pack my bags and go home for his wake and his funeral.
I decided to stay here because Mike would want me to. He'd want me to finish what I started. He'd want me to help people less fortunate than me, stick it out and be a good sport.
So with the support of my team, BOOM ROASTED, I feel confident and I know I made the right decision.
I may have lost a friend back home but I gain 60+ new friends here on ASB Detroit. People who will carry on Mike's dreams of a better community for everyone.
I live UNITED because Mike did.
I'm dedicating my week here to him.
Hola,
While I am not participating in ASB in the traditional sense, I am contributing what I feel to be a unique service. I am following the participants around and act as paparazzi for the week. It is interesting, and you meet lots of new exciting people. The group reflection last night went really well, in my opinion anyway. Everyone was moaning and groaning, and not excited, but we work through things like that, especially on this campus. The mailboxes are set up, and people are really getting into a grove with their teams. I love it.

Every time I tour Detroit I learn at least six new things... ;)
