As the Michigan legislature debates on budget proposals for the upcoming fiscal year, we're keeping close watch on those proposals or changes that will affect Education, Income, and Basic Needs. We're sure you are too - but as these bills move quickly through the process, it can be difficult to keep up.

Below is a summary of proposed changes from last year's budget. Budget items that remain unchanged, or that do not apply to Education, Income, and Basic Needs, are not recorded. We also have a recap of the tax system overhaul that is currently moving through the legislative process.

Please note that, at this point, these are only proposals. These bills are subject to change during the approval process.

We learned at one of the Town Halls last week that SNAP benefits are worth double the value at farmers markets at Eastern Market! Spread the word.
Many people find themselves in jobs that are not going anywhere, being phased out, or in an industry that is declining. In my case, I hit a glass ceiling with no chance of movement or growth. I saw a bleak future with little to look forward to. I started to evaluate what interested me. I had always liked volunteering and working in the public sector seemed to be a better match for me; helping people, making a difference, feeling good at the end of the day.

I learned about the No Worker Left Behind (NWLB) program that offered financial support to those who were left jobless due to the economy, were in jobs that were declining or to those that needed help in low earning positions. The NWLB program was created as a strategy to transition workers into good paying jobs and occupations in high demand or in emerging industries. This program still pays participants $5000 per year for up to two years at a college, university or training facility for qualifying occupational paths.

Needless to say, I capitalized on the available funds to change my path and since I entered the NWLB program in 2007 I have earned my Master of Public Administration from Wayne State University and transitioned from the private industry as a waitress/manager of a small bar and restaurant to working in research at the Institute of Gerontology at Wayne State University and in Public Policy at the United Way for Southeast Michigan.

After sacrificing my high speed DSL for dial-up (trying to save a dollar or two), I have finally been able to catch-up and update several social networks that I belong to...Facebook,Twitter,and MACULspace.

I am so thankful to have access to the Internet (even with its slow speed)...and I realized that many people would love to not only have a computer in the home, but a home to live in as well !

My prayer is that I can maintain a positive presence on all these sites...and use them for good :)

I read an article in the newspaper today regarding several Detroit Public Schools that are slated to be closed. I read it near the beginning of my school day, fighting back tears, not for myself, but for those affected, such as colleagues with whom I have stood with, laughed with, shared lesson plans, classroom management strategies, and other events that are part of being in the teacherhood.

Before I could read the posted story twice, one of my co-workers told me to get the wrinkles out of my face and to remember the source of my strength. Instead of "grieving", fight back with faith, and focus on the fact that there are blessings yet to be experienced, even in the midst of a happening such as this.

She was right. I slowly began to turn my mind around and instead wish favor on those colleagues and the communities that they serve.

I also prayed that they would have strength for the journey...and an ability to look ahead and not look back.

You see...the "List" affects everyone.

Over the weekend, the coach of a competing girls select soccer team called to cancel (and forfeit) his game against Think Detroit PAL’s girls select soccer team, the Turbo. The opposing coach apologized for his girls; they were coming to practice pretty inconsistently, he didn’t have enough players to field a team; he had to forfeit.

It can be challenging for parents to get their kids to activities, even when the activities are good ones. Kids miss practice for all sorts of reasons: music lessons, math tutoring, lack of transportation, and the list can goes on. And yet, thousands of kids show up for Think Detroit PAL practices and games, day in, day out, every year.

One of those kids is Dalson.   Read More »
Today is my first Day being a part of United Way. Just getting in the hang of things, hopefully have more to say next time!
Dear, Everyone

Please help me to fundraise.

Sincerely,

Fedcmi
The other day, I received a call from a lady who asked me to come in to her office to get my baby tested for sickle cell. I explained to her that I did not hav transportation and would have to take three buses just to reach her. She was so glad that I at least made the effort to come out that she was willing to come pick me up a little less than half way so that I wouldn't have to walk so far from the bus stop down to her office. After a long talk, she told my husband and I that we can call her for basically anything. She gave me some numbers to get help with anything that I might need. Itss like she saw my problems before she even knew my full name. Its like god appointed her to me or me to her. Well, to make a long story short, someone who I thought was just gonna be another doctor who I was gonna say hi and bye to and never speak to again ended up being someone who I promised to always keep in touch with and go to in my deepest time of need. I just met her and already feel like I can go to her for anything. But the purpose for this blog was to show everyone that it is true that blessings come when you least expect in. If you have faith as small as a mustard seed, god surely will pull you through the storm. So, never ever loose faith. Your time will come
One of the best bits of advice I have received lately is "Don't let the lessons from your past keep you from the promises of your future." This struck me because I hate making the same mistake twice. But the advice made me think about how many mistakes I might be making by trying to avoid repeating them.

I bring this up in light of the firing of GM CEO Rick Wagoner, a generous supporter and friend of the United Way.   Read More »

Hey Everyone!:)
It's been about a month since I was on the United Way of Southeastern Michigan's website poking around and since I came across an opportunity to win a grant which would be awarded by the United Way. It asked me to answer many questions and write an essay about a service project that I would like to start, in which would be very beneficial.
At first I thought, hmm what's the chances of me winning this, and then I thought about how important it is to me to make a difference in this world. With some great ideas already popping up in my head I decided to write an essay and submit it!
A couple weeks later I received an email regarding winning $500 towards the service project i proposed. I was absolutely thrilled!
Today Eric (My boyfriend) and I met with Kira downtown and started to begin organizing the event.
It's going to take a lot of work and a lot of thinking, but Kira made a great analogy. She said that right now it is like putting together a puzzle, first you start with the corners, then you organize the colors and continue it until you piece every piece together.
Right now we are working on the corners! We meet with Kira on the 21st and will discuss more.
More information to come!
I hope that everyone will be apart of this and volunteer once we have everything ready and set to go! :)
I think my team had some built up tension over the past two days but I'm proud to say we have called a truce and back to our Monday group and we are SO in LOVE. haha. We celebrated over ice cream.

We met our expectations this week, actually we surpassed them and we got to finish early. My team was able to come back and rest so we can stay up all night enjoy our team and all the others.

I'm hungry and I can't wait for dinner.
Our team is building a ramp through the Ray West Memorial Ramp Project for a man named Jason who is handicapped. We began to embark on this adventure yesterday and will continue on until Thursday.

This Alternative Spring Break trip in Detroit has probably been one of the most rewarding experiences of my life. Yesterday we met Bill, the man in charge of the ramp building project. Bill is hands down the most inspiring man i have ever met. Bill is the type of man you could sit down with for hours and talk to about the project, he knows everything and anything you would ever need to know about ramp building and the program. He, alone, inspires me to be a better person.

We have a crew of two men who we work with as well, Mike and Rob. They were both laid off from Chrysler about two years ago and each live over 100 miles from our work site. Even with the own struggles that Mike and Rob are facing, they continue to volunteer their services and help others who need it more then they do.

My team is amazing. There are seven of us, we're all goof balls but we get the job done. We are all extremely excited for Thursday when we get to see Jason ride down the ramp for the first time. I'm sure it will be quite an emotional and inspirational experience.

That is all I've really got for now.

After being in Detroit on Alternative Spring Break for under 6 hours I received terrible news that almost sent me home. My friend Mike had committed suicide. I was hours from home and coping with some of the sadness news of my life.

Immediately after processing Mike's death I had to make a decision... did I want to stay in Detroit or pack my bags and go home for his wake and his funeral.

I decided to stay here because Mike would want me to. He'd want me to finish what I started. He'd want me to help people less fortunate than me, stick it out and be a good sport.

So with the support of my team, BOOM ROASTED, I feel confident and I know I made the right decision.

I may have lost a friend back home but I gain 60+ new friends here on ASB Detroit. People who will carry on Mike's dreams of a better community for everyone.

I live UNITED because Mike did.

I'm dedicating my week here to him.
So today was the first day working at Franklin Wright. I was lucky enough to work at this site last year and I didn't think I'd be able to work there again this year. We weren't completely sure what we would be doing once we got there, but it was super surprising. Basically, they have 2 rooms - one that they want to turn into a library and one that will be a computer lab. The guys who are giving us instructions gave us total control of what to do. We get to design the rooms, paint it any color, etc. It's awesome. So we talked to some of the kids who go to FWS and got their input. We might not be able to get them the huge flat screen tvs and X-box 360's that they want, but we can definitely use "crispy" red paint like they want!! Overall, it was a great day and it just reinforced every single reason why I came here. I love it... I can't wait to go back tomorrow and I am looking forward to getting everything done!!! We can do it! GO TEAM 5: WHERE THE MAGIC HAPPENS!!!

Hola,

While I am not participating in ASB in the traditional sense, I am contributing what I feel to be a unique service. I am following the participants around and act as paparazzi for the week. It is interesting, and you meet lots of new exciting people. The group reflection last night went really well, in my opinion anyway. Everyone was moaning and groaning, and not excited, but we work through things like that, especially on this campus. The mailboxes are set up, and people are really getting into a grove with their teams. I love it.

Every time I tour Detroit I learn at least six new things... ;)

Have a great week!
