How can I become active in my community? Can I help? How I can get involved with volunteer agencies?

I always wanted to help but I never knew how or where to go. I always had it in my mind and my heart was open but all my energy was locked within. Through students groups I was introduced to service and I helped others and since then I could not stop. I felt happy and all this energy from within was free. Then it created a new passion in my life and wanted to lead my life into the path of service.

I was ignorant and I fell into the Trap of assumptions. I used to doubt the situation of Detroit. People created detroit to be that way and to fall apart due to thier lack of motivation. I was proven wrong by every community service I volunteered at. I learned which made me grow beyond what I am. I discovered so many new ideas and feelings. Detroit became my home on weekends!

Alternative Spring Break Detroit is coming again this year on February 28th. It will be second year volunteering during Alternative Spring Break. I wanted to get as many people involved in this week. I was so happy to be volunteering again and making a difference.

I am going to be ASB Alumni Leadership Team and I am nervous. It is a new step in my life and I am excited for it. I am trying to learn how to become a stronger and better leader. One quote I read "leadership is an action all of us can take" that inspired me to believe in myself that I can be a good and effective leader.

Today I was driving in downtown Detroit and I got lost but through this mistake, I got an opportunity to see Detroit and learn new things. Most people may get scared and freak out that they are lost in Detroit and they are going to get shot! This false stereotype makes people ignore Detroit. I was happy I got lost and I went through all these cool old streets.

Detroit now has become a personal goal of mine to make it rise again above the slums and be strong again. It was the #1 city in the United States and it will be again. Now I am taking a history class about Detroit to learn more and more about it. We need to learn from the mistakes and realize the causes so we can fix our Detroit.
