I would like to provide an update on Operation ABC, an early education initiative United Way launched in January. There are now 43 schools in Macomb, Oakland, and Wayne counties participating in the program! And that's not the only good news: Operation ABC is evolving to better serve the needs of schools and their students.

Operation ABC was originally designed as a pull-out program in which children in grades K-2 would receive one-on-one literacy tutoring from a contingent of United Way volunteers. However, the program has become more flexible to allow schools to implement it in the way that works best for them. An Operation ABC program can operate as a pull-out program, a push-in program (in which the school sets specific times during regular school hours for an entire class to work on a literacy activity), and/or an after-school program

For Operation ABC to continue expanding, however, we must overcome two challenges that school districts in all counties face: 1) providing transportation to all children interested in participating in Operation ABC during after-school hours, and 2) increasing our volunteer pool across the region.

Operation ABC will play a vital role in educational preparedness--one of the three components of UWSEM's Agenda for Change. It is essential that we work hard to remove any barriers that prevent schools from participating in this wonderful program. Get involved today by visiting www.uwsem.org/operationabc.

My Interest in Operation ABC
By Unknown user, Dec 4, 2008 at 10:20:26 PM ET (Updated: Dec 4, 2008 at 10:20:26 PM ET )
Hello Tommy: You inspired me very much (when you spoke (not from a scripted presentation:-)-but from your heart) about where you've been and where you are. You also woke me up to the great need that we have for volunteers in the Operation ABC Initiative.

I commend you on what you've done thus far in making this program a reality and growing it. Seeing you on Detroit City Council's Dec 4 meeting reminded me of this great community need and my true interest in mentoring young people. (I went to sleep on the thought.) It has always been an interest of mine...(English being my subject of choice, that is.)

My purpose for writing you at this time is to say "thank you" for inviting me to participate. Although mentoring English to older children had been my interest (in the past), I am willing to "join in where ever I fit in". You have given me another avenue (or vehicle if you will) to apply my enthusiasm, vigor, excitement, energy and positivity (just to name a few adjectives :-, and I want to make a difference when I do. This is not a passing thing for me. Shame on us (those of us who have the necessary tools) for sitting down and watching our children fail in education (from fear, from the lack of)...shame on us!

Although I have much going on at this time (which I'd love to share with you at a later time), I am willing to volunteer 2 to 3 hours of my time - per week for the advancement of a child.

Education is the key, and since I did not take advantage of the opportunities I had (and still have), I look forward to forward to encouraging education to someone else. Perhaps this personal initiative will motivate me (as I attempt to motivate another - "a li'l sister, or a li'l brother :-)

In 5 years, I plan to retire from my job and work full time in a very important operation. This "operation" shall allow me to grow, to expand my skills, experiences and fulfill the goals and dreams that I've always had, that lay dormant within my soul. Perhaps that business is "volunteer work in education". (VWE (pronounced "if we".) I just made this acronym up as I typed this blog. "If we" come together, we can and will make a difference.

I want to join your team and will be registering momentarily.

Tommy, keep up the good work, the good fight and you shall be blessed (I believe it in my heart.)

Peace (always)

My parenthesis
By Unknown user, Dec 4, 2008 at 10:27:22 PM ET (Updated: Dec 4, 2008 at 10:27:22 PM ET )
Hi Tommy, (I am the "user from Detroit) that just wrote about my being inspired, etc., etc. I did not proof-read my blog, because I was in a hurry. So, pardon my double talk (where I said: "forward to, forward to :-)); and my parenthesis (which really throw me off as I read my blog.) They're incomplete in sooooo many places. It makes for difficult reading. So, excuse me for that!!!!

I'll proofread from now on. (Would you believe that I once had a passion for proofreading :-)
