2016-2017 Volunteer Tax Prep with Wayne Metro

In partnership with Wayne Metro Community Action Agency, United Way for Southeastern Michigan is recruiting individuals to become Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) Preparers. The VITA programs are community-based partnerships managed by the IRS that provide free tax return preparation assistance to low-to-moderate income taxpayers, seniors, people with disabilities and non-English speakers. Volunteer Income Tax Preparers establish the greatest degree of public trust by providing top quality service and upholding the highest ethical standards.

Training is quick and easy, and can be taken online or in a classroom setting. Once certified, Volunteer Tax Preparers will assist clients in preparing federal, state and city tax returns. Volunteers do not need to have prior experience to be a volunteer, but must commit to volunteering during the 2016-2017 tax season, and must complete 24 hours of service between the months of February and April. 

Volunteer Requirements:

  • Criminal background check
  • Standard of Conduct Agreement
  • Ethics and Disability Etiquette training
  • Complete classroom or online training
  • Passing grade on the IRS Tax Preparer test
  • Six-hour tax site procedures training

Multiple training locations are available. Volunteers can select the shifts they wish to serve.
