The Issue
Ask your state senator to support The EITC Notification Act! This Act will require companies with five or more employees to notify their employees about the EITC. Since the EITC is only available for working individuals, building awareness in the workplace is critical to its effectiveness.

Approximately 25% of eligible taxpayers don’t claim the Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC), which offers a tax credit up to $5,600 for federal returns and an additional credit on state returns.

The Earned Income Tax Credit is one of the largest anti-poverty programs in the country, but many don’t claim it because they simply aren’t aware.

In 2006, over $220 million in federal Earned Income Credits went unclaimed in Michigan. In the current economy, we can’t afford to leave money on the table – money that will be spent in your local community.

United Way’s role
Along with the Regional Asset Building Coalition, United Way helps taxpayers claim the EITC and other income-building tax credits through free, IRS-certified tax preparation sites throughout the community. The Coalition also sponsors an awareness campaign, but can only reach so many people with its limited resources.
