Ray West Memorial Ramp Project

Named in memory of United Way labor liaison Ray West, the Ray West Memorial Ramp Project provides free wheelchair ramps to low-income residents of Wayne, Oakland and Macomb counties living with physical disabilities.
The project is made possible because of your United Way contributions, and the efforts of countless volunteers, partners from the public, private and nonprofit sectors, and organized labor.
2010 Highlights
- Fourteen new ramps were built in 2010.
- Seventeen local unions provided volunteers, along with Comerica Bank.
- Sponsors included Paralyzed Veterans of America-Michigan chapter, Cerebral Palsy of Michigan and the MS Society.
- Since the inception of the ramp project, more than 115 people have gained or reclaimed their independence thanks to a wheelchair ramp provided by United Way.
2011 Goals
- Complete a comprehensive study to inform our strategies for the region around enhancing the social safety net.
