Education starts on Day 1. Children who live in healthy, vibrant communities that offer rich learning opportunities have a better chance of entering kindergarten prepared, which sets them on the path for lifelong success.
FACT: There are 20,000 at-risk children in our region. Fewer than half of children living in poverty are ready for school at age 5. According to Brookings Institution, children not kindergarten-ready are half as likely to read well by third grade. According to America’s Promise Alliance, Children not reading proficiently by third grade are 4 times more likely to drop out.
Families have a desire to be financially independent. Communities need to offer career opportunities and resources to help families manage and grow their wealth so that they can reach and maintain self-sufficiency.
FACT: 1 in 4 kids in Michigan live in poverty; roughly half of these children live in families in extreme poverty—with annual incomes below $10,000.
The strongest communities ensure that everyone has the resources — like food and shelter — they need to thrive and succeed. Children living in these communities have a better chance for a brighter future.
FACT: Food scarcity is a reality for 1 in 6 people (1 in 5 children) in Greater Detroit, who often don't know where their next meal is coming from.
